I like to sort everything that enters my frame into 4 loose groups: People, Objects, Scenes, and Animals. I never studied photography formally or learned it in any systematic way. Still, even by photographic standards, I do not think the classification is entirely absurd.

If I started with technique, there would probably be plenty to go on about: how to catch an animal at its most natural; how to light a model so their beauty comes through; what focal length and ISO can hold the scale of a landscape; what kind of composition lets an object catch both the eye and the mind.

Honestly, when I press the shutter, whether on a phone or a camera, I am rarely thinking about all that. Most of the time there are people in the scene, animals around the people, objects around the animals, and scenery around the objects. The boundaries are not so neat. Strangely, though, the photographs I end up liking usually do reveal a subject that draws the eye. So, in the end, they can be sorted after all.
